FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF USING ADDITIVES FOR FUEL OIL.
BASES AND METHODS OF CALCULATION USED BY rb bertomeu S.L.

Experimental data were always taken as the basis, and were recorded in Cogeneration Plants with Diesel engines running on fuel oil; many years were spent collecting comparative data; long-term monitoring programmes were carried out in conjunction with the proprietors and the engine manufacturers. rb bertomeu S.L. developed a methodology to produce the Profitability Study for the application of additive treatment to fuel oil with “rb bertomeu” beco F1/ASF in order to improve its performance. The methodology and the calculations, applicable to any plant, are based on the following points:

1.       Cost of the additive treatment of the fuel oil, with the additive “rb bertomeu” beco F1/ASF, taking into account the price of the additive and the necessary dosage.

2.       Price of fuel oil supply.

3.       Price of replacement exhaust valves for the engines.

4.       The more significant proven savings provided by the additive treatment:
4.1 – Reduction in consumption of fuel oil (2.4 to 3.1 %)
4.2 – Statistical Reduction in consumption of replacement valves (minimum 50%)
4.3 – Increase in electricity generation due to fewer stoppages (plants in continuous operation)

 With these savings alone, the calculation results in a Nett Benefit of 1.4 Euros per MWhe produced in the Plant, when assuming a price for fuel oil of 180 Euros per metric tonne and a cost for the additive treatment of 0.625 Euros/MWhe (maximum cost charged for small supplies).

 Other real savings are enumerated, but not evaluated or introduced in the calculation, as these are more specific to each Plant or sufficient cost data are not available. The main factors that could be applied to each Plant by reworking the calculations, applying their particular costs and prices, are the following:

  • Reduction in costs of removal and treatment of fuel oil sludge (minimum 50%).
  • Reduction in costs of replacements for Turbo-compressors, due to the increase in their operational life by over 100%.
  • Greater production of steam in associated boilers, as the heat exchangers keep cleaner.
